The Chicago Union Giants changed their name to the Leland Giants in 1905. In 1907 the legendary Rube Foster joined the team as manager and ace pitcher. In 1909, the Giants lost a close exhibition series to the powerful Chicago Cubs, but even in losing, they helped legitimize the quality of Negro Baseball.
